DOLLHOUSE - A/W 2019
Situation Brunswick 2019 Exhibition - City of Moreland
“space through visibility and visuality conspicuously give fashion meaningful shape, volume, and form “, as discussed by John Potvin in The Places and Spaces of Fashion. I was strongly drawn towards this theory, hence became a starting point for myself to construct the collection. Initially, in approaching the challenge of designing based on places and spaces within the Brunswick district, it became clear to myself that the architectures and the preservations of so many important historical sites has powerful reminiscence of the 60s era. Using Susan Sontag’s “ Note on Camp “ as the backbone of my collection, I intend to project an exaggeration of the 60s home-economics families image. My design consists of the twins look that materials are locally sourced, including tea towels and curtains, and collaborate with elaborated silhouettes, while the third look feature the ‘mother’ figure in a boxy red coat, this further provide the audiences an insight of a 60s family living in Brunswick through the witty lenses of Camp. Using recycled interior materials, i intend to celebrate the multicultural district through prints on the materials.

“Camp is a certain mode of aestheticism.”
“…a way of seeing the world as an aesthetic phenomenon”
“…The camp is not in terms of beauty, but terms of the degree of artifice, of stylization.”
“Notes on Camp”: Susan Sontag
The collection has been filtered through not only the witty lenses of Camp but also referencing movies such as The Grand Budapest Hotel to further illustrate the ideal vision that the collection was designed for. As discussed by Susan Sontag, Camp reaches far more than “beauty”, but specifically, a form of artificial motif that pushes for “aesthetic phenomenon”, the projection of stylizing femininity, and exaggerations of emotions.
All these factors reinforce the idea that we should take fashion NOT too seriously, in this case, my collection intends to communicate far more than just editorials & commercial aspects. The persona of my collection was not to express the authentic Vintage beauty through the community, but rather, appropriating the previous elements and to propose a MOCKERY & CELEBRATIONS using unconventional/interiors materials locally sourced.
The collage reinforces both initial research starting point which was at the Meaditarrean market, and the development along the way with far more of unconventional features of forms and fabrics.
The collection rather proposes the “power to transform experiences”.
